All About Men’s Health
In Singapore, one in three males is at risk of various health issues. Common concerns for men over 30 include fatigue, difficulty sleeping and hair loss. At Faith Medical clinics, our doctors provide in-depth investigation and treatment for:
- Erectile dysfunction
- Premature ejaculation
- Hair loss
Common chronic diseases in men include hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, benign prostate hypertrophy and cancer. Speak to our doctors about the right screening package for you.
Health Screening for Men Above 50
Men are less likely to seek regular check-ups, but screenings after 50 can catch conditions before symptoms appear. Recommended screenings include abdominal aortic aneurysm, depression, Hepatitis C, high blood pressure, lung and colon cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, HIV, and overweight/obesity.
How to Produce Healthy Sperm
Healthy sperm criteria: quantity (above 15 million/ml), quality (oval heads and long tails), and motility (above 40% moving sperm).
Tips for healthier sperm
- Weight management – excess fat can lower testosterone
- Limit soy products (may affect sperm production)
- Stay physically active
- Avoid smoking and reduce caffeine intake
- Consult your doctor for personalised guidance
Testosterone Deficiency (Andropause)
As men age, testosterone production declines. Symptoms may include baldness, reduced body hair, fatigue, high blood pressure, enlarged prostate, mood changes (irritability, low self-esteem, anxiety) and reduced sexual drive. Treatments include testosterone supplements or replacement therapy, prescribed after blood tests and hormone analysis.
Premature Ejaculation
Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common male sexual disorder. Causes include poor ejaculatory control, prostate changes, diabetes, neurological conditions or relationship issues.
Management options
- Stop-and-start technique
- Squeeze technique
- Prescribed medications
Consult your doctor for accurate diagnosis and personalised treatment.
Erectile Dysfunction
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve an erection for sexual intercourse. It can be psychological, neurological, hormonal or a symptom of cardiovascular disease. Doctors assess via sexual history, medical and physical examination, and laboratory testing.
Prevention includes a healthy lifestyle: avoiding smoking and alcohol, balanced diet and regular physical exercise. Short-term ED caused by anxiety often resolves when the underlying stress is addressed.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
HPV is the most frequent sexually transmitted infection and can affect both men and women. It can cause cancer and genital warts. Prevention includes vaccination (ages 9-26), regular health screenings and safe sexual practices. We offer HPV vaccines at Faith Medical clinics, with Medisave and CHAS subsidies available.
Blood Test for Gastric Cancer
Gastric cancer is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide and is common in Singapore. A new blood test allows early detection, replacing more invasive endoscopy. Risk factors include age above 55, male gender, family history, high-salt diet, smoking and obesity. See a doctor promptly if you experience persistent indigestion, abdominal pain, nausea or unexplained weight loss.
