General Care
Cough is actually a defence mechanism — the body’s way of clearing secretions from the airways during a respiratory tract infection. It is one of the most common illnesses in both children and adults.
Symptoms
Cough, fever, headache, difficulty breathing, and chest pain. The phlegm-producing phase typically lasts 2–3 days, but full airway clearance can take 2–3 weeks.
Treatment
Paracetamol for fever and headache, plenty of fluids, and antibiotics or a nebuliser if necessary. Note that cough can also be a symptom of asthma or other conditions — see a doctor to identify the root cause.
Prevention Tips
- Avoid close contact with infected people
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water
- Don’t share towels, handkerchiefs, or toys
- Stay active, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep
